Inverness City Vision 2010: Shaping the Future of Inverness

Over the next six months, Highland Council will be preparing a new City Vision for Inverness, to replace the one prepared in 2003. This will be part of the new generation of planning documents that the Council is preparing.

Inverness is a special place which means many things to many people - be they city residents, visitors from across the Highlands, and tourists from further afield. The future of Inverness is about people and their relationship with the natural and built environment. One very good way of shaping this future is by agreeing a vision – what we want that future to be like.

This work is being supported and facilitated by Architecture + Design Scotland, who are promoting the role of well-designed sustainable places across Scotland. Trevor Muir, Chief Executive of Architecture and Design Scotland stated that “A+DS are delighted to support Highlands Council in the process of discussing what kind of place Inverness could be. This is a challenging question. The only real answer can emerge from discussion on the ground. We commend Highlands Council, both the leadership and the officers for committing to the agenda of creating and maintaining places where people want to be, particularly in the context of the national agenda of reform of the planning system”.

This is a different way of planning. We want to work with everyone with a stake in the future of Inverness and develop a shared vision. We will be doing this at a series of exciting one day Future City Vision events from Wednesday 20th January to Friday 22nd January 2010 for people from local communities, businesses, schools and colleges, and the voluntary and public sectors.

These workshops are the communities’ opportunity to help shape the city's future, building on the recent consultation on the Main Issues Report. It will be the input from the workshops that will help shape the City Vision.
Provost Gray said: “This is an exciting opportunity for the people of Inverness to have their say on the future growth of the city. On the wider front there is the role that Inverness plays both in the wider Highlands and throughout Scotland, a stronger Inverness will help create a stronger Highlands.
