Sustainable Design Guide Supplementary Guidance

Sustainable Design Guide: Interim Supplementary Guidance

The Council’s new Sustainable Design Guide has been developed to accompany and support the approach to Sustainability and Design within the forthcoming Highland wide Local Development Plan (HwLDP).

The Guide is intended to encourage the development of high quality and sustainably-designed buildings which will minimise impacts on the natural environment, help counter the effects of climate change and also promote greater use of local and renewable materials.  The key sustainable design issues dealt with in the Guide are summarised in a practical Sustainable Design Checklist which everyone can use to prepare a Sustainable Design Statement to accompany their planning applications.

You can view the Sustainable Design Guide online at:

as well as at your local Area Planning Office and Highland Council Headquarters, Inverness.

The public consultation on the Sustainable Design Guide was completed on 18 March 2011 and adopted as Interim Supplementary Guidance to the Highland wide Local Development Plan at the PED Committee of 25 May 2011, pending completion of the Environmental Report.

If you have any questions regarding this guidance or how it applies to a particular development, please do not hesitate to contact your local Area Planning Office.
