Highland Heat Mapping Project

AECOM were commissioned by The Highland Council, Scottish Government and Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) in December 2009 to investigate and determine the potential structure, content and uses of a heat map and produce one for the Highland Council area using a methodology that is repeatable for all other Scottish local authorities.

The Heat Map Report is now available.  A higher resolution version of the report is available free of charge on CD on request.

The Heat Map itself comprises layers of mapping and tools for use in the Council’s Geographic Information System (GIS).

Unlike previous heat maps, the Highland Heat Map provides users with tools to analyse and interrogate opportunities for renewable heat at a local scale.  It takes into account issues such as heat demand, potential heat supply and skills and technology available in an area. The report also provides a template which outlines key stages in preparing a heat map. It is the intention that the heat map will play an important role in identifying and defining future renewable heat opportunities across the Highlands.

The Council will prepare and publish Guidelines for Use of the heat map and will identify and act upon opportunities to further develop the heat map in the future.

The project has been funded by the Scottish Government and led by a joint steering group with representatives from the Council, the Scottish Government and Highlands and Islands Enterprise.

A training seminar was held in March 2011 and the presentations from this are available below:
