Undergrounding of Extra High Voltage Transmission Lines

The Highland Council, together with Scottish Natural Heritage and the Cairngorms National Park Authority, commissioned Jacobs Babtie consultants to provide a report into the technical, economic and environmental issues relating to the possible undergrounding of very high voltage (400 kV) electricity transmission lines. This is prompted by the proposals by Scottish Hydro Electric Transmission Ltd and Scottish Power for an upgraded 400 kV power line between Beauly (west of Inverness) and Denny (near Falkirk). Other power line upgrades in Highland are also being considered longer term.
