As of 1st December 2010 the Highland Council will charge for the service of creating addresses.
The Council are responsible for street naming and the numbering of new developments and arranging with Royal Mail for the creation of new postal addresses. To ensure postcodes and addresses are allocated well in advance of occupation of a property we require your proposals for naming and/or numbering to be submitted within 1 month of receipt of your Building Warrant approval. It is your responsibility to request this service.
The charges cover the costs of providing this service and include:
• Agreement of Street and Block Naming (where required)
• Creation of Numbering Scheme (where required)
• Provide correct form of addressing to Royal Mail to enable them to allocate the Postcode and to update the Post Office Address File (PAF)
• Communicate correct final addressing to the Emergency Services, Assessor, Electoral Roll, and the One Scotland Gazetteer
Why should I apply for an address?
The correct creation and communication of new addresses enables the efficient and effective delivery of Council services to your property. In addition delivery companies, Internet ordering, refuse collection and an ever increasing range of organisations rely on the Postcode and correct address to be able to identify your location and deliver services to you.
Single Property Development
In the case of a single property development requiring only a house name or number please complete the application form either online or submit by post. Your property will be referenced to the named street (where applicable) from where access is gained.
Multiple Property Developments
For multiple property developments where new street or block naming is required (including within commercial/industrial developments) please submit a site plan of the development with your naming proposals (if any) for street or block names with the completed application form.
Where street and/or block names are required – we will forward your proposals to the appropriate Ward Manager to consult with local representatives (Community Council and elected members) on the proposed naming.
Once completed, the “agreed name/s”, postcode, post town and the numbering scheme will be communicated back to you. This agreed name will be recorded by Royal Mail as the official address.
A guidance note to assist in choosing names is attached and also available online at:
