The Highland Council, as Roads Authority, is responsible for maintaining the List of Adopted Roads. The list contains the roads for which the Council has a maintenance responsibility.
The Council also maintains the list of Trunk Roads within its Area. Transport Scotland is the national transport agency for Scotland and is the Roads Authority with respect to the maintainance of Trunk Roads and Motorways.
Transport Scotland has contracted out the management and maintenance responsibility for Trunk Roads to two operating companies, BEAR Scotland and Scotland TranServ.
