Crash Magnets

Before Driving Ambition can be delivered in a School they must have undertaken Crash Magnets with their pupils.

Crash Magnets is a road safety tool box for secondary schools aimed at 14–17 year olds.  It is a classroom resource developed by Road Safety Scotland and delivered in our Schools by teachers.

All Schools in the Highlands and Islands have this package and had contact with their Local Authority Road Safety Officer when the package went into the school about it’s deliver to pupils.

For further information visit: www.road-safety.org.uk/education-and-families/secondary/crash-magnets

Crash Magnets must be delivered first as Driving Ambition is the final part of a Secondary School pupils Road Safety Education and is most effective when delivered on the back of Crash Magnets rather than as a one off session.

Driving Ambition – What does it look like?

This Young Driver Intervention consists of 6, 25 minute sets (with a 5 min turnaround between sets) delivered by different agencies as follows:-

Agency & What The Set Covers

Northern Constabulary: enforcement, car modification, anti-social behaviour,

Highland Council: in the mind, hazard perception,

HIFRS: role, role of a fire officer at scene of an accident, airway & bleeding management,

British Red Cross: DR ABC, scene management, spinal/neck/head/airway management, bleeding,

Driving Instructor: driving licence & test,

Mechanic: show me, tell me, under the bonnet.

Set content has been developed by each agency in line with Scottish Government Road Safety Research

These sets are evaluated by the HRSWG on an annual basis and updated as appropriate.  There should be no deviation from set content without consultation with the HRSWG (contact details at start of information sheet).

Communication with the School & Agencies

In order for things to run smoothly on the day good communication with the school is vital.  The following requires organisation:-

1.    Timetable

This should be agreed with the school and agencies well in advance.

2.    School Groups

The School should split the pupils into their 6 groups in advance so pupils know which group they are in before the day.  Each group should have a nominated leader who is given a timetable and is responsible for making sure the group run to the programme.

3.    Areas Required at the School Premises

Lecture Theatre for whole year group DVD presentation at start and finish of the event.  Make sure DVD is working prior to the start of the event.

Agency                                Space & Equipment Required

Northern Constabulary           Lecture Theatre with white screen

Highland Council                   Classroom with white screen

H & I Fire & Rescue Service  Classroom with white screen

British Red Cross                  Classroom

Driving Instructor                   Classroom with white screen

Mechanic                              Outside area (preferably covered)

It is important that the 6 set areas are located as closely as possible to each other as this helps the programme to run on time and also prevents pupils from not making it between sets!

See enclosed programme with timings.  This programme has been piloted and in operation for many years now and should be adhered to.  Any alterations you would like to make should only be considered in conjunction with the HRSWG.

Evaluation

See enclosed evaluation forms.  The first evaluation form is given to pupils on the day for immediate completion.  The second evaluation form is sent to the school 3 months after the event for distribution to the same pupils.

The purpose of the first survey is to check the knowledge and understanding gained by pupils from the Driving Ambition Sessions immediately following attendance.

The purpose of the second survey is to gain knowledge of the influence Driving Ambition has had on the pupils driving behaviour.

The data from the completed forms is to be entered onto survey monkey, the online data tool used by the HRSWG.  Please get in touch with the HRSWG to access the web link for survey monkey.

These evaluation forms have been put together with the help of an Educational Psychologist and have also been in operation for many years.  Any alterations you would like to make should only be considered in conjunction with the HRSWG.

Press

We actively encourage the media to be made aware that Driving Ambition is taking place in a particular school.   Please inform the HRSWG of any press involvement.
