Business Travel
- Transport generated 24% of global emissions in 2006 and similarly accounted for 24.4% of Scotland’s total emissions.
- Business and Fleet transport accounted for 14% of Highland Council total emissions in 2006/2007.
- Highland Council business travel in 2006/2007 amounted to just under 13 million miles – that's over 500 times round the world!
In fact, transport is the principal sector where emissions continue to rise, a situation that must be altered if Scotland's Climate Change Bill's call for a 34% reduction in emissions by 2020 is to be met.
Congestion is a significant problem and car dependency is contributing to poor levels of physical activity. Improvements to public transport and development of new technologies are part of the solution, but behavioural change is vital.
The Highland Council aims to make business travel for staff and Members more sustainable, and reduce emissions by 12% by 2012.
Travel to Work in Highland
- Just over 73% of Highland Council staff travel to work by car and of those just over 52% travel alone.
- 37% live within 3 miles of their workplace but only 16% of them walk or cycle to work on a regular basis.
- A large proportion of Council staff do not require their car for work purposes on a regular basis and just over 25% never use their car for work purposes.
