Statistics
In 2010/11, The Highland Council spent over £402,672 hiring cars and vans.
All new cars have a fuel economy label.
If all cars hired by Highland Council were C-rated (under the fuel economy label scheme) 70 tonnes of CO2 per year could be saved but staff should always assess their need to travel by following the Travel Hierarchy methodology.
Car Hire Guidance
- Think carefully about the category of car required. Do you have a business need for a powerful, estate car?
- Larger cars are not necessarily safer - many small cars have a 5 star safety rating. Car Safety Ratings
- Staff must ask for the most fuel efficient car available in the category they require. (C - rated for fuel efficiency is ideal.)
- Staff must have cars delivered to their base unless home is closer to the intended destination or when an early morning departure is required to reach a destination in time.
- Be realistic about the time you intend setting off for your destination. This avoids hire cars being delivered long before they are needed.
- Be aware that you are not covered by Highland Council insurance to drive the hire car out with the times you have stated you require it.
- Eco driving can reduce CO2 emissions by 10% through driving your car more sensitively. If every member of Highland Council staff reduced their business travel emissions by 10% we would reduce our CO2 emissions by 437 tonnes a year!
