If your trip is deemed absolutely necessary, is perhaps convuluted or when you need to carry a lot of equipment, a car may still be the most viable option. Try to find out if any colleagues are travelling to the same destination and offer to car-share with them.
You can email colleagues asking when they may need to travel to the same or nearby destination or check the noticeboard on the intranet for staff going on similar trips.
The Highland Council pays 5 pence per mile to any driver carrying a passenger for business. In 2010/11, 611,561 passenger miles were claimed at a cost of £13,662. If staff had travelled these miles in separate cars, it would have cost the Council at least £158,489 more, also representing carbon savings of 244 tonnes. Please do try to claim if you do take a colleague in your car as this the only method by which the Council can monitor car sharing for business.
