Bike Week
The Council again supported Bike Week from June 18th – 26th 2011 offering events from family cycle runs to "Bike Fix" clinics for commuters.
- Staff were invited to share how many miles they’ve cycled during the week by completing this short questionnaire: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/5BDR3CL Entrants received a Highland Council water bottle and were entered into a prize draw to win a Tefal Quick Cup energy saving kettle.
- Cycling Scotland offered 8 free places on a Commuter Cycling Course in Inverness for staff that lack confidence cycling on the road. Please email green.council@highland.gov.uk for more details.
- A free "Bike Fix" clinic took place at Highland Council Head Quarters on Wednesday 22nd June, 12-2pm courtesy of local bike shops: Bikes of Inverness, Highland Cycles and Halfords. Northern Constabulary offering free security tagging of bikes.
- A series of bike rides took place along the canal path between Dochgarroch and Inverness on Friday June 24th and on Saturday June 25th.
- Many cycle to school events for children were organised by the Council's Active School Co-ordinators.
- An audit of Inverness active travel infrastructure was launched at the Inverness City Committee.
Bike Week coincided with repairs on the Kessock Bridge repairs which may well have encouraged commuters to try this mode of travel rather than suffer delays.
Highland Council recently secured a total of £560,000 for active travel infrastructure. This money has been sourced from a variety of funding streams including Highland Council, Sustrans, HiTrans, the Inverness Common Good Fund and the European Regional Development Fund and together we will work in partnership to to improve and promote active travel infrastructure on Highland roads.
