Temporary Closure of Canal Towpath

Published: Monday, 14 January 2019

Major engineering works by Scottish Canals require that the towpath between Fort Augustus and Aberchalder be closed.

Major engineering works by Scottish Canals require that the towpath between Fort Augustus and Aberchalder be closed for 2 -3 weeks from the end of January. After this time access will be re-opened, although intermittent closures may be necessary for the next 3 months to maintain public safety while works are being carried out.

As there is no alternative route for walkers, GGW users are advised to use the bus service between Fort Augustus and Aberchalder or South Laggan. For those travelling North to South the bus stop can be found near the petrol station in Fort Augustus. For those travelling South to North, bus stops can be found in South Laggan (on the main road nearest to the canal lock gates), in North Laggan (Just north of the swing bridge) or in Invergarry (near the petrol station.)

Timetables for Citylink services between Inverness and Fort William can be found here.
