English as an additional language

The English as an Additional Language (EAL) Service provides advice, consultation, training and where appropriate direct teaching to children and young people for whom English is not their first language. 

EAL teachers work with staff in schools to make sure:

  • Diversity is valued
  • Home language is maintained
  • Inclusion and equality of access to the curriculum
  • Identification and assessment of need
  • Appropriate level of support
  • Effective teaching strategies and resources
  • Teaching support to individual or small groups of pupils
  • Holistic approach to assessment
  • Awareness of linguistic, religious and cultural matters
  • Effective home and school liaison
