Today (Monday 16 October) Deàrrsadh - a group of 11 and 12 year olds from Dingwall have won top prize in the Folk Group Competition for Under 13 year olds at the Royal National Mòd in Lochaber which was formally opened last Friday.

The delighted young singers attend Dingwall Primary and Dingwall Academy and were one of 8 folk groups from across Scotland in the competition. Each group performed two songs of their own choice, with accompaniment of musical instruments. Placed in second place was a group from Lochaber called Na-h-Abraich.

For the nineth year running The Highland Council has supported this competition, and this year, for the first time, the winning group will receive a £500 prize from Wipro, an International Information Technology Services corporation.

Councillor Allan Henderson, Chair of the Highland Council’s Environment, Development and Infrastructure Committee and also a member of the Highland Council’s Gaelic Strategy and Implementation Group, said: “I had the honour of presenting the prize to the winning group in this excellent competition. It’s been a delight to be here today to watch the young people perform to such a high standard.

“It is obvious the support which is provided to schools in relation to traditional music is bearing fruit for the next generation. Congratulations to everyone who took part. They should all feel proud of themselves.”

Tha na seinneadairean òga a’ frithealadh Bun-Sgoil Inbhir Pheofharain agus Acadamaidh Inbhir Pheofharain agus b’ iad aon de ochd còmhlain bho air feadh Alba a ghabh com-pàirt san fharpais. Ghabh gach buidheann dà òran den roghainn fhèin, le taic bho innealan-ciùil. Bha Na h-Abraich – còmhlan à Loch Abar – san dàrna àite.

Airson an naoidheamh bliadhna às dèidh a chèile, tha Comhairle na Gàidhealtachd air taic a thoirt dhan fharpais seo agus am-bliadhna, airson a’ chiad uair, tha an còmhlan a bhuannaich a’ faighinn duais £500 bho Wipro, corporaid Seirbheisean Teicneòlais Fiosrachaidh Eadar-nàiseanta.

Thuirt an Comhairliche Ailean MacEanraig, Cathraiche Comataidh Leasachaidh agus Bun-structair Chomhairle na Gàidhealtachd agus ball de Bhuidheann Ro-innleachd agus Buileachaidh Gàidhlig Chomhairle na Gàidhealtachd: “Bha e na urram dhomh an duais a thoirt seachd dhan chòmhlan a bhuannaich an fharpais sgoinneil seo. Tha e air a bhith na thlachd dhomh a bhith an seo an-diugh a’ coimhead nan daoine òga a’ cluiche is a’ seinn gu ìre cho àrd.

“Tha e follaiseach gu bheil an taic a thathar a’ toirt do sgoiltean a thaobh ceòl traidiseanta a’ toirt soirbheachas gu buil dhan ath ghinealach. Meal-a-naidheachd dhan a h-uile duine a ghabh com-pàirt. Bu chòir dhaibh uile a bhith moiteil dha-rìribh.”
