Highland schools urged to join Gairloch Primary School in Scottish Education Awards nomination

Issued by the Scottish Government

People in the Highlands are being urged to nominate their local schools, nurseries or individuals for their outstanding achievements before its too late, as applications for the Scottish Education Awards 2010 will close on Friday 5 March 2010.

The awards, which celebrate the triumphs of pupils and teachers in Scotland, have attracted hundreds of nominations from across Scotland but many more schools and individuals are worthy of recognition.

Amongst the nominations is Maria Fraser, a teacher at Gairloch Primary School who has been nominated by a local parent for the Teacher of the Year Award.

The grateful parent has nominated Maria for an accolade to recognise her professionalism and devotion to teaching their child who has a rare Epilepsy condition.  Maria has taken the time to learn all about the pupil’s medical condition and adapted her lessons to suit his learning needs.  She has also learnt how to administer medication to the pupil and encouraged other children to find out more about Epilepsy.

Maria has gone beyond her teaching duties to ensure that the pupil received the learning support that he needs and her dedicated and positive attitude has inspired pupils to learn and express themselves.

Do you know of a local school or individual who deserves to be nominated like Maria?  If so, this is the last chance to showcase best practice in local schools and reward the hard work and commitment of all education staff in the Highlands including teachers, head teachers, learning assistants, administrators and janitors.

Michael Russell, Cabinet Secretary for Education and Lifelong Learning, said:

“Our schools have many exciting developments underway supported by talented individuals. I want to urge people in the Highlands to make sure that their local school does not miss out on well-earned recognition through the Scottish Education Awards.

“Awards will given across a diverse range of categories – including heath, sustainability, technology, enterprise and employability, sport, citizenship, inclusiveness, literacy and numeracy – as well as individual awards, such as Teacher of the Year.

“Making an entry online is quick and easy so be sure to nominate your school before the deadline on 5 March.”

The Scottish Education Awards 2010 are open to all publicly funded schools, including secondary, primary, nursery and special schools.  There are also categories that recognise the contributions of teachers, headteachers and support staff.

Nominations are currently being invited from across all 15 categories including Health and Wellbeing, Literacy and Numeracy across Learning, Sustainable School and Teacher of the Year.
