Get outdoors this weekend with The Highland Council’s Countryside Rangers

The Highland Council Countryside Rangers are challenging people to get active outdoors this weekend by coming along to two events near Inverness.

Friday 31 August is bat and moth night at School Wood in Farr.  Why not come along and join the rangers as they venture into the woods to find out more about the creatures that live there? There will be a chance to catch moths and have a close-up look before releasing them. Also special bat detectors will be available so you can listen into the sounds bats make and hopefully follow them as they fly in the woodland and the nearby river.

This event starts at 8pm, lasts for 2 hours and is free. Anyone interesting in coming along should meet up in the School Wood car park, at Farr which is south of Inverness.  The grid reference is NH 685337.

On Saturday (1 September) a special Bushcraft activity day will take place at Abriachan Woods between 2-4pm.  Experts will be on hand to help people try their hand at making a shelter, building a fire and foraging for food.

Places on the Bushcraft afternoon are strictly limited and places must be booked in advance by telephoning 01463 255291. The exact meeting place will be given out when making a booking.  The event costs £3 for adults and £2 for concessions.

Katy Martin, The Highland Council’s Inverness Ranger said: “Both of these events are fun, family friendly events aimed at giving people a hands-on chance to get out in the fresh air and learn more about what goes on outdoors. Abriachan and School Woods are both lovely woods with a wealth of natural resources so we won’t have to look too hard to find what we need. Wearing camouflaged khaki clothing is not compulsory, but warm clothing is advised.”

The Countryside Rangers run many events and guided walks which aim to help raise awareness and encourage appreciation of the scenery, wildlife and heritage of the Highlands. A programme of Ranger Guided Walks and Events is on the council’s website at: http://www.highland.gov.uk/countrysiderangerevents.htm
