Highland Council winter road condition and school closure report for 14 January 2015

Road condition and gritting treatment reports by The Highland Council’s Community Services for the morning of Wednesday 14 January 2015 are as follows:  

Skye and Lochalsh
Overnight and this morning there have been accumulations of 1-3cm of hail and snow throughout the area. Treatment is on-going on priority basis. Posted 14/1/15 09:05

Caithness and North Sutherland
Snow on all routes, mainly 1.25 - 5cm on lower routes and up to 25cm on high routes with drifts up to 60cm. Crews are carrying out treatment in priority order. Posted 14/1/15 08:37

Black Isle, Mid and West Ross Report
In the West of the area there is snow up to 25mm at lower levels increasing up to 100mm deep on higher routes with some frosty and icy patches. In the East there is snow up to 100mm deep on lower level routes with up to 150mm on the higher routes. Some drifting is occurring on the more exposed routes. All routes being treated in priority order. Posted 14/1/15 07:46

South Sutherland and East Ross
All roads are affected by up to 300mm of snow with drifting on high ground. All roads are being treated by priority but some routes, particularly those in Alness, Invergordon, Kildary, Evanton and the Ardross areas will not be treated until later in the day. Posted 14/1/15 08:59

Nairn
There is 3cm of fresh snow on lower roads and up to 10 cm on higher roads plus some drifting. The A939 and B9007 are currently closed due to drifting snow. Routes are being treated by priority. Posted 14/1/15 07:54  

Badenoch and Strathspey
All roads in the area are affected by snow at all levels. There has been fresh snow overnight and drifting. The amount of snow fallen in the last 36 hours in villages is approximately 25-30cm. Strong winds and snow showers are continuing so teams are treating all routes by priority. The A939 Grantown to Dava road is currently closed but is due to re-open shortly. The B9007 is closed. Lochaber
Fresh snow overnight which has drifted in places so all roads are affected by snow at all levels. The strong winds and snow showers are continuing. Crews are treating all routes by priority. Posted 14/1/15 09:28  

Maps of the Council’s gritting routes by priority and policy are available online for: Badenoch and Strathspey; Caithness and North Sutherland; Inverness; Lochaber; Nairn; Skye and Lochalsh; South Sutherland and East Ross; and Wester Ross and Black Isle.  

The information provided is a summary of reports from operational staff and is intended to give a general indication of typical conditions in each area at a point in time.  It is not intended to imply that any individual route is entirely snow and ice free and drivers must be aware that conditions can change rapidly and make their own assessment of conditions for travelling. 

Highland has the longest road network of any council in Scotland and it is not possible to treat every road at the same time. A priority system is applied to treat the areas in greatest need first.  

Trunk roads are gritted by BEAR Scotland (North West) for Transport Scotland.  

Road closures:

Newhall Bridge B9163 on the Black Isle is closed until further notice, due to structural damage and Struie Hill Road B9176 remains closed due to fallen trees. In Wester Ross the Bealach Na Ba road is closed today B9007 in Badenoch and Strathspey. In the Nairn area both the A939 and B9007 are closed due to drifting snow.

A further 5 schools are nurseries delayed their start time this morning by an hour.  They were Alness Academy; Charleston Academy; Dingwall Nursery (both English Medium and Gaelic Medium) and Dingwall Primary.  

The situation is continually changing so an up-to-date list through the day up until 6pm is provided by visiting the council’s school closure website www.highland.gov.uk/schoolclosures. Tomorrow morning parents and carers are advised to check this site from 7am onwards or use the school closures phone line on 0800 564 2272 using the PIN number for their school (which is also available at http://www.highland.gov.uk/schoolclosures) for further information updates.
