The Highland Council’s Gaelic Team, in partnership with Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, and with financial support from Bòrd na Gàidhlig organised the Gaelic Annual Residential ‘Seachdain nan Deugairean’ event for young people which took place last week at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig – the Gaelic College in Sleat, Isle of Skye.

A total of 33 young people from Portree, Plockton and Mallaig High Schools participated in the event which took place over 4 days and involved both Gaelic fluent speakers and Gaelic learner pupils.

The young people had the opportunity to take part in various work-shops including drama, writing, media skills and outdoor educational activities. The activities were planned according to their linguistic ability.

Professor Boyd Robertson, Principal of Sabhal Mòr Ostaig said: “This event is well established, and is a good example of the successful partnership which exists between The Highland Council and Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, formalised in a Memorandum of Understanding. It is very important that young people have the opportunity to develop their Gaelic language skills through sporting, creative and cultural activities, all within a Gaelic immersion setting.”

Seachdain nan Deugairean, is an important event for young people as it provides a fantastic opportunity for both learner and fluent pupils to develop and use their linguistic skills out with the formal education setting. In addition to this they are able to engage in creative and sporting activities acquiring new skills whilst also meeting peers from other schools. Sabhal Mòr Ostaig and The Council continue to work in partnership which has resulted in this successful annual event.
