Understanding empty homes
Empty homes can sometimes cause problems for neighbours and communities. We offer advice and support to help residents take positive steps when a property is left empty and is causing concern.
Why homes are left empty
Homes may be left empty for personal or financial reasons. These include:
- emotional attachment to a loved one’s home
- the need for costly repairs
- life changes such as moving into care or hospital
There is no law in Scotland that prevents a home from being left empty. However, owners are responsible for maintaining and securing their property.
