Help for neighbours of empty homes

Understanding empty homes

Empty homes can sometimes cause problems for neighbours and communities. We offer advice and support to help residents take positive steps when a property is left empty and is causing concern.

Why homes are left empty

Homes may be left empty for personal or financial reasons. These include:

  • emotional attachment to a loved one’s home
  • the need for costly repairs
  • life changes such as moving into care or hospital

There is no law in Scotland that prevents a home from being left empty. However, owners are responsible for maintaining and securing their property.

Problems caused by empty homes

Neighbours often report issues such as:

  • overgrown gardens
  • broken windows
  • disrepair
  • anti-social behaviour
  • fire risk
  • visual impact on the area
