In recognition of the local and strategic importance of the road network in Fort William but increasing reliability and resilience issues compounded by congestion, Transport Scotland’s Strategic Transport Projects Review 2 highlighted the need for the development of an Integrated Transport Plan (ITP) for the town.
AECOM / Stantec have now been commissioned to undertake this work. This will involve a review and, where needed, a refresh of the findings of previous studies, traffic modelling and new assessment, leading to the development of the ITP following Transport Scotland’s Strategic Transport Appraisal Guidance (STAG). Utilising STAG, transport options will be identified and, importantly, taken through a detailed appraisal process to establish viability and acceptability. All forms of travel will be considered in accordance with the sustainable transport hierarchy. The STAG process will inform the ITP, which will bring all proposed options together in a comprehensive, multi-modal plan. The plan will establish a package of interventions, priorities, direction, responsibilities, funding sources and process for change for the town of Fort William.
Stakeholder engagement and public consultation will be a cornerstone of the work, which is estimated will take up to 18 months to complete. This study contributes directly to the FW2040 Masterplan and the vision for the town, which sets out to be ‘A Connected Place’.
