About us

Hate Free Highland is a campaign by local partner agencies in the Highlands of Scotland to:
  • Raise awareness of how hate incidents and hate crimes impact on people who experience or witness them
  • Encourage people to report any incident that could be a potential hate crime

Hate Free Highland complements Police Scotland’s national hate crime campaign.

Much of this work benefits from a collaborative, partnership approach and the campaign involves Community Planning Partners in Highland. Activities include engaging with third party reporting organisations in Highland who can help individuals to report incidents and in some cases can offer support. A local steering group reports into the partnership Safer Highland group.

Partners have affirmed their commitment to tackle this work through a shared equality outcome expressed in the Single Outcome Agreement (SOA), so that:

"People in Highland are, and feel, free to live their lives without harassment and discrimination, and can take part in community life."

Partners also share specific equality outcomes with regard to hate incidents and crimes, so that:

  • The population of Highland have an increased understanding of hate incidents and of their impact on individuals and communities
  • People feel more confident in reporting hate incidents that they have experienced or witnessed
  • People who report hate incidents feel satisfied with the response received from public agencies
  • Individuals within protected groups feel safe and secure in their local community
