Awareness briefing sessions for Highland Council election candidates

Prospective candidates at the forthcoming Highland Council elections on 4 May 2017 and their agents are being invited to attend one of a series of six awareness briefing sessions being held by the Returning Officer, Steve Barron, Chief Executive of The Highland Council.

The sessions will take place in Inverness, Fort William, Portree, Dingwall, Golspie and Wick. Topics to be covered include the nomination procedure, the election timetable, the issuing of poll cards, postal ballot packs, candidate’s spending limits, and details on what is involved in the role of a councillor.

The dates and venues for the briefing sessions are:-

  • Tuesday, 28 February 2017
     6pm -   Council Chamber, The Highland Council Headquarters, Glenurquhart Road, Inverness
     
  • Wednesday, 1 March 2017
    2pm -   Council Chamber, Lochaber House, High Street, Fort William
     
  • Thursday, 2 March 2017
    11am - Tigh na Sgire Council Offices, Park Road, Portree
    4pm -  Council Offices, High Street, Dingwall
     
  • Friday, 3 March 2017*
    10am -   Council Chamber, Drummuie council Offices, Golspie
     3pm -   Wick Town Hall Chamber - *Sessions to be led by Senior Deputy Returning Officer Michelle Morris

The Highland Council consists of 21 electoral wards, each represented by three or four elected councillors. 

 The notice of election will be published on Monday, 13 March and candidates will have until 4 pm on Wednesday, 29 March to lodge their nominations.

Polling will take place between 7.00am and 10.00pm on Thursday 4 May with the count taking place on Friday 5 May.
