A very successful Gaelic Information Day and Fun Event took place in Sleat, organised by Bun-sgoil Shlèite with support from the Highland Council Gaelic Team. The Open Day, which was aimed at parents and guardians of 0-5 year old children, provided information on what are the benefits of bilingualism and the support currently available to parents from Gaelic agencies.  Representatives from Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, Bòrd na Gàidhlig and Gaelic4Parents of Stòrlann were present and provided information on the resources that support Gaelic Medium Education.  Parents had the opportunity to speak to Highland Council teachers of Bun-sgoil Shlèite about Gaelic Medium Education, as well as staff from local Gaelic Childcare Centre Fàs Mòr.

In excess of 25 toddlers and young children attended the event along with their parents and guardians.  There were lots of fun activities for the children to participate in, including face painting, bouncy castle and team games.  Refreshments and home baking were provided on the day by Bun-sgoil Shlèite Parent Council.

Mrs Floraidh Forrest, a parent who has child in the Bun-sgoil Shlèite said  “On Saturday myself, my husband and three children, aged 6, 4 & 1 attended the Bilingualism Day at Bun-sgoil Shlèite. There were representatives from a variety of Gaelic organisations present, providing information on how they can support you and your child should you choose to educate them through Gaelic Medium. My oldest son is already going through GME, and we hope to follow suit with our other two children.” She continued “Educating your child through the medium of Gaelic isn’t always straightforward, particularly if you do not speak the language yourself, but in the long-run, the opportunities you give your child far out-weigh the challenges you face as a parent. There was a bouncy castle and cake stall at the event, which meant the children all enjoyed the day too.”
