Entertainment on Academy Street is the focus of the next Heritage event, for the Inverness Townscape Heritage (TH) Project.  On Wednesday 7th March the TH Project is hosting a free screening of Casablanca, the last film shown at La Scala Cinema, before it closed in January 2001.

Showing at 7pm in the La Scala cinema at Eden Court next Wednesday evening, there is the opportunity to see this iconic love story on the big screen. Also on display will be some historic memorabilia from the main theatre and picture houses on Academy Street including The Play House, the Empire Theatre and La Scala.

Historically Academy Street was the destination of choice for the folk of Inverness and the surrounding area.  Entertainment on the Street has been a recurring theme when the TH project has been gathering and recording memories of Academy Street.  Not only in the large theatre and cinemas, but the pubs and tea rooms, where many socialised with friends and young couples courted.

It is therefore, very appropriate that he last movie to be screened on the street was Casablanca, the greatest love story ever told! Time may have gone by, but it has not diminished the magic of this classic film, first shown in 1942.

In his capacity as Chair of the Townscape Heritage Partnership Board, Councillor Richard Laird, said:  “This is a rare opportunity for film fans to see Casablanca on the big screen and also a chance to see historic memorabilia from the three former cinemas on Academy Street, from HighLife Highland’s Archive and museum collections.  Come along and enjoy the film, please take the time to share your memories of Academy Street.”

Tickets are limited and can be booked on Eventbrite: https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/casablanca-tickets-43313495832?aff=ehomecard or by calling the TH office on: 01463 715316

The TH Project delivers a regular programme of talks, to bring history to life and to preserve hidden stories for future generations to enjoy.
