Cuach na Cloinne 2018

Leugh sa Ghaidhlig

Issued on behalf of Comunn na Gàidhlig

Following the success of Cuach na Cloinne over the past few years, and particularly the very positive feedback on Cuach na Cloinne 2017, Comunn na Gàidhlig (CnaG) has now started preparations for Cuach na Cloinne 2018.

The football competition (5 a-sides) is for Gaelic-speaking primary school children, classes 4-7.  At this stage, we want to hear back which schools wish to participate in the competition.  We would be delighted for schools, which would be unable to enter a team because of small school rolls, to come together with other small schools, to enter the competition.  We also welcome pupils from the lower classes if this is necessary.

We intend to continue with the same format where we have six regional competitions with the winners of the six regional competitions progressing to the Finals.

We propose having regional competitions in Stornoway/Back, Daliburgh/Liniclate, Portree, Inverness, Fort William and Glasgow. The Finals will be held on Tuesday 29 May at Bught Park, Inverness.

The proposed dates for the regional competitions are as follows:

  • Thursday 3 May 2018 - All-weather pitches, Smith Avenue, Stornoway / Back Recreation Centre
  • Thursday 3 May 2018 - Bun-sgoil Dhalabroig/Sgoil Lionacleit
  • Friday 4 May 2018 - Portree High School, Skye
  • Tuesday 8 May 2018 - Bught Park, Inverness
  • Wednesday 9 May 2018 - Bun-sgoil Ghàidhlig Loch Abair, Fort William
  • Thursday 10 May 2018 - Glasgow Green Football Centre, Glasgow

The competitions will all start at 10.30am and should be completed by around 12.30 depending on the number of teams participating.

With regard to competition rules, the teams will comprise of five players, boys or/and girls, and up to 2 substitutes.  The competition will be held entirely in Gaelic and it is vital that all participants have Gaelic.  CnaG representatives will speak to all participants prior to the start of the competitions to ensure all the children in the teams have Gaelic.  All teams must be accompanied by at least one Gaelic-speaking adult.

Cuach na Cloinne is funded by Bòrd na Gàidhlig, Highland Council, Comhairle nan Eilean Siar (Western Isles Council) and is managed by Comunn na Gàidhlig.
