Highland Council winter road condition report for Thursday 17 January 2019

Maps of the Council’s gritting routes by priority and policy are available online at www.highland.gov.uk/gritting

The information provided is a summary of reports from operational staff and is intended to give a general indication of typical conditions in each area at a point in time. It is not intended to imply that any individual route is entirely snow and ice free and drivers must be aware that conditions can change rapidly and make their own assessment of conditions for travelling.

Road condition reports by The Highland Council’s Community Services for Thursday 17 January 2019 are as follows:

Skye and Lochalsh – as at 09:36: Light covering of snow, frozen in places, affecting most routes. Heavier snow on higher mainland routes. Treatment ongoing in policy and priority order.

Ross and Cromarty – as at 09:35: Negative Road surface temperatures and snow across all routes this morning from a light dusting to 3 inches on higher ground. Icy patches in sections where snow has fallen on frozen surface. Treating, blading and double running sections where necessary. All primary routes treated and secondary and ‘other’ routes ongoing. No issues to report at present.

Caithness and North Sutherland – as at 08:34: Light covering of snow. With up to 50mm on high routes - all being treated. Treatment ongoing no known issues.

South Sutherland - 08:26: Dusting to 3 inches of snow on higher routes. Icy conditions with low and below zero road surface temperatures. All treated as necessary according to policy, with 20 - 40 gsm where required on steeper routes.

Lochaber – as at 08:23: Frosty morning. Light covering of snow in places. A884 Hill icy. All Primary and Secondary routes being treated and ‘other’ routes if required according to policy. No reported issues overnight.

Inverness – as at 10:02: Light covering of snow over all roads this morning up to a few inches on higher ground. Gritting all routes including all footpath routes this morning according to policy.

Highland has the longest road network of any council in Scotland and it is not possible to treat every road at the same time. A priority system is applied to treat the areas in greatest need first.

Trunk roads are gritted by BEAR Scotland (North West) for Transport Scotland.
