Highland Refuse and recycling collections over the Easter bank holiday

The Highland Council is reminding people that their household refuse and recycling collections will be operating as normal over the Easter bank holiday.

Please ensure that your bin is out by 7.00am on your scheduled collection day as there may be changes to your collection time.

The Council is asking everyone to play their part to help protect waste crews and prevent the spread of Coronavirus on the collection routes.

Safety tips are:

  • Regularly clean your bin handles and lids
  • Wash your hands before and after touching your bins.
  • Please make sure your bin lids are firmly closed to help prevent crews unnecessarily touching them.

If you see the bin collection crews, please let them know you appreciate what they’re doing and give them a wave or a smile!

Bottle banks are still available across the Highlands for glass and jar recycling so please continue to recycle your glass bottles and jars when you do your essential food shopping ensuring you observe social distancing.

Household Waste Recycling Centres are currently closed due to the Government’s decision to restrict all but non-essential movement. Residents are being asked to act responsibly by not putting waste you may have taken to a HWRC in your household bins as it may overwhelm collection services. Please avoid carrying out large DIY projects unless you have space to store the waste. If you decide to have a clear-out while you’re at home, please don’t put everything in the bin, store it safely in a garage or shed until normal service resumes.

As the garden waste service has also currently been suspended until further notice, people are being encouraged to start home composting their grass cuttings and hedge trimmings where possible. For more information on how to compost at home visit: http://www.recycleforscotland.com/reduce/home-composting

To remind people of what they can do to help the waste crews the Council has created a short animation that highlights the key points. This can be viewed on YouTube via this link https://youtu.be/S4EhD4T7l5s
