50 days to go before the end of the EU Transition Period

Cllr Jimmy Gray, Chair of the Highland Council Brexit Working Group is highlighting that there are now 50 days to go before the end of the EU Transition Period on 31 December 2020.

He said: “I would urge businesses to prepare for the new rules which will come into force on 1st January 2021. It is vital that you know how the changes will or could affect you and to consider what plans you need to make.  In particular consider your supply chains, any staffing impacts and possible import export requirements and costs. Details on what to do can be found on the UK Government website and Prepare for Brexit webpage .”

Cllr Gray also highlighted the timescales for EU Citizens living within the Highland area should they still need to apply for the EU Settlement Scheme. EU Citizens have until 30 June 2021 to apply or 31 December 2020 in the event of a no deal but this will allow you to continue to be able to

•  work in the UK

•  use the NHS for free

•  enrol in education or continue studying

•  access public funds such as benefits and pensions, if you’re eligible for them; and

•  travel in and out of the UK

Around 8,000 EU citizens in Highland have already applied for settled status.

Cllr Gray added: “Time is running out for you to get ready for these changes. Don’t delay! Find out how this will affect you.”
