Highland Council winter road condition report for Friday, 15 January 2021

The information provided is a summary of reports from operational staff and is intended to give a general indication of typical conditions in each area at a point in time. It is not intended to imply that any individual route is entirely snow and ice free and drivers must be aware that conditions can change rapidly and make their own assessment of conditions for travelling.

Road condition reports for Friday, 15 January 2021 are as follows:

Ross and Cromarty East
Posted at 08:28 - Main routes are generally good, with odd sparkle and icy patch where there is surface water. Secondary and ‘other’ routes reporting grey frost and increased frequency of icy stretches due to melt from fields/banks. All routes inclusive of footways being treated accordingly this morning.

Caithness
Posted at 08:04 - Dunbeath area / Westerdale are showing low road surface temperatures with sparkling roads. Damp roads throughout the rest of Caithness with no issues reported.

Sutherland
Posted at 08:02 - Hoar frost and very icy in places throughout the area. All routes currently being treated. No known problems.

Skye and Lochalsh
Posted at 08:34 - Patchy hoar frost initially on the primary routes which have now been treated. Patchy hoar frost also on secondary routes which are currently being treated. Otherwise no other hazards reported overnight.

Lochaber
Posted at 08:31 - Action carried out as planned and no overnight problems.

Nairn
Posted at 07:41 - Widespread frost and icy patches, roads are being treated as necessary.

Inverness
Posted at 07:26 - Some water lying on road due to ice melt and negative road surface temperatures. Main roads OK with grey frost on secondary and other routes. Treating all morning routes and footpaths.

Badenoch and Strathspey
Posted at 07:36 - Widespread frost, some icy patches, roads being treated as necessary.

Lochalsh and Ross and Cromarty West
Posted at 09:05 - Low Confidence forecast. Road surface temperatures were sub-zero overnight on most routes. Temperatures were higher than forecasted first thing. Routes 3,5,10,14,15 & L2a were cancelled between 05.30-05.45. The other routes were instructed to patrol and grit where necessary. There is still some action currently ongoing.
