Members motion to expedite roll-out of 20mph limit signs in Sutherland communities

A motion was made by the Chair of Sutherland Committee at this week’s meeting (1 March) to expedite the roll out of 20mph limit signs in towns and villages across the area. The motion was seconded and supported by all Members present at the meeting.

Chair of the Committee, Cllr Richard Gale said: “I would like to see this project, the implementation of 20mph signs, carried out a lot more quickly. We can see 20mph signs on main roads, but I would like to see them in villages too. We need to begin to push this project forward as quickly as possible so we can consult with communities in villages across the county.”

Recently, there has been the introduction of temporary 20mph speed limits in Dingwall and Aviemore via Sustrans emergency COVID Spaces for People funding with Fort William, Thurso and Portree due to go live imminently. These temporary limits are valid for 18 months and will then require a permanent Road Traffic Regulation Order.

There is no dedicated budget for the implementation of 20mph signs in Highland. However, the Council is continuing to identify funding opportunities and there is the intention to bring a report to the Economy and Infrastructure Committee in May 2021 to outline potential ways forward for 20mph limits across the region.
