Highland Council Garden Waste collections resumed for the season last week with collections getting off to a good start, helped by the warm Spring weather. Householders who live in a brown bin catchment area and who have purchased a permit for the 2020/21 season (1 September 2020 to 31 August 2021) are reminded to put their brown bins out for collection, check    www.highland.gov.uk/gardenwaste for collection dates.

Permits for 2020-2021 season are still available to purchase for £45 per bin and will be valid until the end of August 2021; customers can purchase up to 3 permits per household.

At The Highland Council budget meeting held on Thursday 4 March 2021, elected members agreed that the cost of a garden waste permit for the next permit season 2021 – 2022 (1 September 2021 to 31 August 2022) will increase by only £1.35 (3%) to £46.35 instead of the previously agreed £5 annual increase.

Chair of the Communities and Place Committee, Cllr Allan Henderson said: “We recognise that households are continuing to face financial challenges due to the on-going Covid pandemic so I am pleased that at our budget setting meeting last week we agreed to reduce the cost to householders.

“By continuing to use the garden waste recycling service, residents will be doing their bit for the environment as well as helping the Council to reduce costs from landfilling waste.”

The fortnightly collection service is easy and convenient to use and accepts a wide range of garden material including grass cuttings, leaves, hedge clippings, weeds, flower, plants and small branches.

Customers are advised to visit the Council’s website  www.highland.gov.uk/gardenwaste to check they live in a brown bin collection area.

Garden waste permits can be purchased on-line at www.highland.gov.uk/gardenwaste; or by calling the Highland Council’s Service Centre on 01349 886660.

The service is optional, and householders are also able to take their garden waste along to their local Recycling Centre free of charge.
