Highland Council winter road condition and school closure report for Thursday 2 December 2021

The information provided is a summary of reports from operational staff and is intended to give a general indication of typical conditions in each area at a point in time. It is not intended to imply that any individual route is entirely snow and ice free and drivers must be aware that conditions can change rapidly and make their own assessment of conditions for travelling.

Road condition reports for Thursday 2 December 2021 are as follows:

Ross and Cromarty East

Posted at 8.18am. Road surface temperatures below across the area with mixed roads conditions reported this morning. There is a light covering of snow across the Easter Ross routes from Evanton to Tain at all levels. There are patchy conditions for Mid Ross routes with a dusting of snow and some ice in places. All routes are being treated according to policy and footpaths across the area. No overnight issues were reported.

Caithness

Posted at 7.53am. A mix of damp and wet roads with light snow and hail showers in the area. All routes are being treated according to policy and clearing footpaths. No other issues reported.

Sutherland

Posted at 8.13am. Up to 2 inches of snow on higher routes with a covering of snow affecting most areas and extensive ice affecting most roads. Snow clearing and treatment on going.

Skye and Lochalsh

Posted 7.39am. All primary routes were treated last night, and both primary and secondary routes are being treated this morning. Other routes as may be required according to policy. Negative road surface temperatures recorded on all routes this morning. Some ice sparkle reported on North Skye routes and no snow fall hazards in North Skye. Extended icy stretches and a light dusting of snow requiring caution on the Broadford Armadale A851. Double treatments provided this morning on A851. In Raasay there has been some hail showers reported and planned treatments are ongoing. Driver caution is advised on all routes.

Lochalsh and Wester Ross

Posted at 7.53am. A mixture of conditions this morning with some icy patches and a dusting of snow on low routes and up to 4cm of fresh snow on higher routes. All routes are being treated according to policy. No overnight issues were reported.

Lochaber

Posted at 8.22am. All routes treated according to policy. Low road surface temperatures with dusting of snow over high ground. No other reported issues.

Nairn

Posted at 7.57am. There is 1 to 2 cm of snow on higher routes, a dusting of snow on lower-level routes and widespread frost. Roads are being treated as necessary according to policy.

Inverness

Posted 6.10am. There is a dusting of snow on some low roads and half an inch covering of frozen snow on some high roads. Gritters are heading out onto all routes.

Badenoch and Strathspey

Posted 7.50am. There is 1 to 2 cm of snow across the area with widespread frost/ice. All roads are being treated as necessary according to policy.

School closures

As of 10am this morning there are no school closures as a result of bad weather conditions.  

The school closures page on the Council’s website at: www.highland.gov.uk/schoolclosures is updated from 7am and cleared each evening by 6pm.
