Highland Council winter road conditions report for Thursday 22 December 2022

Maps of the Council’s gritting routes by priority and policy are available online at www.highland.gov.uk/gritting.

The information provided is a summary of reports from operational staff and is intended to give a general indication of typical conditions in each area at a point in time. It is not intended to imply that any individual route is entirely snow and ice free and drivers must be aware that conditions can change rapidly and make their own assessment of conditions for travelling.

Road conditions reports for Thursday 22 December 2022 are as follows:

Badenoch and Strathspey

Posted - 07:23 - Wet in the south end with icy and frost patches in the north. Primary and Secondary routes being treated throughout. No known overnight issues. 

Caithness

Posted - 08:05 - Positive road side temperatures and damp roads. No action required. No other known issues to report. 

Inverness

Posted - 07:35 - Roads wet with icy stretches on some of them. Gritters out treating all routes. 

Lochaber

Posted - 07:07 - Morning planned action stood down due to higher road side temperatures on updated forecast. No other road related issues reported. 

Nairn

Posted - 07:21 - Damp and wet roads throughout the area with rising temps. Hill route being treated this morning. No known overnight issues. 

Ross and Cromarty (East)

Posted - 09:05 - Good sparkle on all routes with grey patchy frost and ice being reported. All routes being treated to re-establish salt levels from wash off. No known overnight issues. 

Skye and Raasay

Posted - 08:25 - Road temperatures generally higher than forecast. Primary routes treated this morning and stood down. No issues reported overnight. 

Wester Ross, Strathpeffer and Lochalsh

Posted - 08:25 - Non-forecast black ice has been reported at Lochluichart, Strathpeffer and Strathconnon. Operatives and gritters to attend. There was a culvert collapse in Glen Torridon last night. A road plate is currently heading there. It's currently passable with care, however, some larger vehicles may struggle to negotiate the hole until the road plate is in place. There are icy conditions at Knocken and on the Fain, which were forecasted and are currently being treated. These treatments are ongoing.

Sutherland

Posted - 08:34 - Coastal routes damp with a light sparkle, inland routes a lot of black ice around, with some sheet ice on some of the higher routes. Secondary routes much the same and treated as resources permit. No known overnight issues. 

School closures

As of 09:40 this morning there are no schools or nurseries closed.
