Gaelic community learning and development initiatives commended

A range of Gaelic Community Learning and Development initiatives are helping to further grass roots support for people of all ages learning Gaelic in their communities across Highland.

Members of The Highland Council’s Gaelic Committee were updated on a wide variety of projects being delivered by the Council’s Community Learning and Development Gaelic Officers who are helping people young and older to learn or improve their Gaelic.

From Fort Augustus, to Portree, Inverness and Fort William; Newtonmore and Dingwall, Contin, Thurso and Bettyhill to Thurso and Plockton, Staffin, Kilmuir, Drumnadrochit and Nairn to name but a few of the locations are where Gaelic learning initiatives have reached communities.

Chair of the Council’s Gaelic Committee Cllr Calum Munro said: “Much work has been achieved by the Community Learning and Development officers in supporting parents and families with Gaelic in the home and in early learning and childcare settings and also supporting Gaelic in community development initiatives.”

Members were informed that a Gaelic toddler support worker is now employed by Highland Council in Lochaber and a new worker has commenced work covering the Moray Firth area and in Newtonmore the Gaelic parent and toddler group has now been re-established with a local playleader. To celebrate the National Gaelic event, Seachdain na Gàidhlig, the Council’s Gaelic Team organised a series of online Leugh is Seinn le Linda sessions for Highland Gaelic Medium pupils.

Across Primary education a partnership with FC Sonas to deliver Gaelic football camps has been highly successful. Other sports and cultural related clubs and after school activities have also been established in several primary schools encouraging young people to use Gaelic outside of the classroom in everyday life and in fun settings such as Club Spòrs, Film G and a family Fun Run.

In secondary schools the Community Learning and Development team support organisations such as Sabhal Mòr Ostaig; Fèis Rois, the Gaelic Careers Event Siuthad and Ainmean-Àite na h-Alba to encourage Secondary School age pupil participation in Gaelic languages events, opportunities and activities run by these organisations.

Across older age groups the Community Learning and Development officers have been supporting Gaelic Adult Learning Classes with a strong demand for beginners face-to-face and online classes and promoting family learning opportunities such as Family Learning events at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig on Skye and at Bun-Sgoil Ghàidhlig Loch Abar in Fort William.

In partnership with Alzheimer Scotland West Highland, the Gaelic Team is supporting the “Gaelic Conversations” initiative to provide support to carers and families of people living with dementia whose first language is Gaelic. The team also supported the Fort Augustus Gaelic Group on their research project “Glen of the Bards” which involves recording and performing songs from the area with adult Gaelic classes.

Cllr Munro added: “I commend the Gaelic Officers on their achievements in partnership and supporting the many community groups, organisations and individuals that they are working with while getting out an about and making a difference for Gaelic learning in our communities.”
