Working in partnership with community organisations and local business, The Highland Council’s Comfort Scheme has been recognised for its service to the region.

The team responsible for the Comfort Scheme were delighted to be short-listed in the 2023 Highland Council Staff Recognition Awards.

The project was one of four short-listed under the ‘Partnership Award’ category.  Sponsorship for the awards was provided by Story Contracting, Technology One, Wipro, E J Parker Technical Services, Sustrans and J. Thomson Printers.

The Partnership Award category recognises teams or individuals who demonstrate outstanding partnership with public sector partners, colleagues, and communities to achieve better outcomes.

The Highland Comfort Scheme initiative provides additional public conveniences across the Highlands and helps address issues such as wild toileting.

The Scheme allows any organisation to provide public use of their toilet facilities, supported by a grant towards their operating costs.

Information is promoted to service users with a map of toilet provision on the Councils website at www.highland.gov.uk/publictoilets where businesses and organisations are also welcomed to register interest in becoming a comfort scheme provider.

A recent report to Highland Councillors on the Communities and Place Committee informed that the number of Comfort Scheme providers will increase by more than 30% from 42 to 55 with new 3-year agreements in place providing a sustainable service going forward.

Chair of Communities and Place Committee, Cllr Graham MacKenzie said: “Congratulations to the Amenities staff who have facilitated the Highland Comfort Scheme and well done on their short listing.

“A significant increase in the number of new Comfort Scheme providers joining the existing provision is vital for locals and visitors to the Highlands.

“Comfort Scheme provision increases the public toilet facilities available, making the Highlands a better place to live and visit. Comfort Schemes also bring welcome footfall to local businesses benefiting the economy.”
