Highland winter road condition report for Monday 23 October 2023

The information provided is a summary of reports from operational staff and is intended to give a general indication of typical conditions in each area at a point in time.  It is not intended to imply that any individual route is entirely snow and ice free and drivers must be aware that conditions can change rapidly and make their own assessment of conditions for travelling.

Road condition reports for Monday, 23 October 2023 are as follows:

  • Badenoch and Strathspey (as at 10:51) - No action required as positive road temperatures and drier, calmer conditions.
  • Caithness (as at 08:31) - Temperatures are close to freezing to some areas this morning. No winter action taken and no known overnight issue to report.
  • Lochaber (as at 08:14) - Roads are dry and temperatures are lower than forecast. There are no known overnight issues.
  • Sutherland (as at 08:07) - Precautionary treatment is taking place in the area. Grittters are going out to Lochinver through to Lairg, Strathy through to Tongue, Tongue through to Altnaharra & Ardgay over Struie hill. No known overnight issues.​​
  • Ross and Cromarty East (as at 07:58) - Negative temperatures and road surface temperatures this morning resulting in some patchy frost. All primary routes treated last night as a precaution. Secondary routes are being checked and treated as per policy. There are mainly dry roads with some sections of seepage. No known overnight issues. .
  • Wester Ross, Strathpeffer and Lochalsh (as at 06:46) - Road surface temperatures were forecast to dip to and below 0 around 8am this morning. Gritter heading out to the Bealach na Ba and the Fain and Strathconnon. Sensible care should be taken on all routes. There are no known overnight issues. Update – Duncraig Road C1222/C1221) has reopened after the remaining windblown trees were removed yesterday evening.
  • Inverness (as at 06:43) - There are mainly dry roads with some damp patches. All Primary routes treated last night. Secondary routes receiving treatment this morning.
  • Isle of Skye and Raasay (as at 06:06) - Marginal road temperatures in the area. No known overnight issues and no winter action required.
