Part-Time 20mph Speed Limit Approved for City School

Members of the City of Inverness Area Committee have today (Monday 17 November) approved the introduction of a Part-Time 20mph Speed Limit Traffic Regulation Order on the Inverness Southern Distributor Road near Bun-Sgoil Ghàidhlig Inbhir Nis.

The new measure, to improve the safety of all road users and pedestrians, will operate during school opening and closing times and at lunchtimes. It aims to improve safety for pupils and other vulnerable road users in this busy area, which is currently subject to a 40mph limit and serves a primary school, secondary school, supermarket, and housing developments.

For several years, Bun-Sgoil Ghàidhlig Inbhir Nis and its Parent Council have raised concerns about vehicle speeds at pedestrian crossings and the visibility of the school to drivers. Recent speed compliance data showed average speeds higher than desired near crossings.

City Leader Councillor Ian Brown said: “This is a positive step towards improving road safety for pedestrians, especially pupils, in a busy traffic area.  By introducing a part-time 20mph limit, we are responding to community concerns and creating a safer environment for school pupils and other road users.”

The part-time speed limit will help reduce speeds at critical times and increase driver awareness of the school’s presence. Pupils from Inverness Royal Academy will also benefit, particularly at lunchtime when many travel to nearby facilities.

The TRO will now be implemented following today’s approval.
