Public Conveniences, Wick
Highland Council has now passed on CCTV footage to police in connection with vandalism to the public conveniences at Wick.
This public toilet has been repeatedly subject to closures as a result of several incidents of vandalism in recent times.
CCTV is installed and working at the public conveniences and Highland Council is closely working with Police Scotland to investigate vandalism.
After CCTV footage was handed to Police Scotland in February youths were identified and spoken to.
Recently, further CCTV evidence was handed to Police Scotland relating to vandalism from the end of September. Police Scotland are currently reviewing the CCTV footage, and an update from them is expected in the coming weeks.
The CCTV system has produced good and clear images, so Highland Council would like to advise the community that it is taking all steps possible to identify whoever is responsible. We welcome the assistance of Police Scotland in doing so.
These public toilets in Wick have been targeted by persistent vandalism and anti-social behaviour, the extent of which has included:
• Concrete poured over fixtures and fittings;
• blood smeared on walls, fixtures and fittings;
• cubicles destroyed;
• flooding with toilet roll;
• fire raising; and
• fixtures smashed and broken.
Vandalism is a total waste of local taxpayers' money and diverts much-stretched resources from council works and services. We urge anyone with information relating to vandalism to contact Police on 101 or to phone Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
