Parents Advised of Possible Disruption at Highland Schools

Parents of pupils at Highland schools are being advised that industrial action proposed by trade unions representing support staff may disrupt schooling on Wednesday 20 August.

A one day strike about pay comes only one day after the start of the school session.

Teachers are not involved in the dispute but some support staff, such as classroom assistants, janitors, cleaning and catering staff will be.

Hugh Fraser, Director of Education Culture and Sport, The Highland Council, is telling pupils who require hostel accommodation to return to school on Thursday 21 August.

And pupils with additional support needs who attend Drummond School, Inverness, St Clement’s Dingwall, and St Duthus, Tain, are being advised their schools will be closed on Wednesday.

Mr Fraser says that parents should consider putting in place child care arrangements – in case the strike action results in school closure.

Should schools remain open, he says pupils should consider taking a packed lunch as the school meals service may be affected.

He said: “Every effort will be made to keep schools open. However, health and safety issues will be taken very seriously. Parents should be aware of possible disruption to schooling and the use of community facilities and consider child care arrangements.”

Mr Fraser hopes to be in a position by Tuesday to identify those schools affected by industrial action.
