Streetscape works completion on Union Street sees return of buses

Inverness Buses are scheduled to return to Union Street on Monday 22 December from the temporary stops in North Church Street.

This marks the substantial completion of Streetscape works in Union Street for the benefit of the public.

The new surface paving and street furniture is designed to give the street a more pedestrian friendly feel and the significant investment should give a boost to the Old Town.

Remaining works in Baron Taylor’s Street, Lombard Street, Inglis Street, Ness Walk and Stephens Brae will be complete by Spring 2009.

Provost Jimmy Gray, Chairman of The Highland Council’s Inverness City Committee said: “I would like to thank the Inverness public for their patience during the streetscape works and welcome back the buses to Union Street. The new traffic system in the town centre will help both shoppers and shopkeepers by freeing up congestion in the City Centre and will create a better experience for shoppers in the City.”

Scott Pearson, Divisional Traffic Manager, Stagecoach in the Highlands, said: "We are delighted to see the works completed in the city centre after a significant period of upheaval for all concerned.  The new system should improve the bus network in the city as well as making the area an easily accessible and safer environment for shoppers."

Garek Begg, Chairman of Inverness BID said: “This is great news it will be great to see the buses back in moderation as they will breathe new life blood back into the old town.”
