Emergency Works at Corran Ferry Slipway Given Go Ahead

Emergency works on the Nether Lochaber slipway at Corran Ferry are to be carried out this summer at an estimated cost of £650,000  The work is needed to allow the continued future operation of the ferry, which has the highest vehicle movements of any ferry in Scotland

Members of The Highland Council's Transport Environmental and Community Services Committee were advised today (Thursday) that the Nether Lochaber slipway - on the east side of the ferry route - is in poor condition and in need of essential remedial works. A combination of age of structure, strong currents and the effects of the more powerful propulsion unit of the new ferry are having a detrimental effect on the condition of the slipway structure

Designs for the remedial works are nearing completion and it is hoped to invite tenders from interested contractors within the next six weeks.

Councillor Bren Gormley, welcomed the Committee's support for the essential repairs.  He said: "Corran Ferry is a lifeline service, which provides essential vehicular access from Nether Lochaber to Ardgour and the Ardnamurchan Peninsula The eastern slipway is in need of urgent repair and I am delighted that this will go ahead in the early summer.”

He welcomed the assurance of the Committee that talks would be held with Nether Lochaber and Ardgour Community Councils to keep them informed of progress with the works.
