Action for Red Squirrels

People in the Highlands are being encouraged to get involved in supporting Red Squirrels.

An event has been organised by The Highland Council’s Countryside Rangers and Highland Red Squirrel Conservation Officer to help people understand something about the lifestyles of these lovely creatures.

Anyone interested in supporting this native species should meet at the Corrimony RSPB Nature Reserve car park in Glen Urquhart on Tuesday 1st July. This evening event takes place from 6.30 to 8pm.

Corinne Hambly, Highland Council’s Countryside Ranger said: “The Highlands are the last refuge of the Red Squirrel in Scotland.  These wonderful and increasingly rare animals live in Glen Urquhart and we are inviting people to get involved in supporting them.

“We will be looking at feeding signs and ways of figuring out how many squirrels live in the area. This is really useful information for a species in decline. The hope is that some people would like to take on a small squirrelly project of their own to give a better picture of how the Glen Urquhart Red Squirrels are doing.

“Everyone is welcome and it should be a fun activity for families and a reason to get out and explore some prime squirrel habitat in the area.”

Anyone interested should please contact Corinne Hambly, Highland Council Countryside Ranger on 01463 710786.
