Highland Success at Community Recycling Awards

The Highland Council has featured on the prize list at the Community Recycling Network for Scotland (CRNS) annual awards and conference held in Perth on Tuesday March 11.

The Council won the Local Authority Partnership Award for its continued support for the community recycling sector through waste diversion agreements, which will divert 4,000 tonnes of waste from landfill disposal in 2007-08.

The Council has provided funding of £900,000 in the current financial year to 10 community  recycling organisations, which range from Blythswood Care and NewStart Highland to small furniture reuse groups like Acharacle Community Company and Rag tag N textile, who produce clothes from waste textiles.  Similar support is committed in the new financial year.

Councillor John Laing, Chairman of The Highland Council’s Transport Environmental and Community Services Committee, said: “The award recognises the Council’s commitment to supporting the community recycling sector, who do such a good job in our remote area.  We look forward to these groups becoming mainstream operators and demonstrating they can compete with waste sector players generally.”
