HMIe Report on Craighill Primary School, Tain

A report of a recent HMIe inspection of Craighill Primary School, Tain, has identified key strengths in the following areas:

• The leadership of the headteacher.

• Partnership with parents and the wider community.

• Pupils’ attainment in Gaelic language in the Gaelic-medium class.

• The promotion and celebration of pupils’ wider achievements.

• Effective transition arrangements from the nursery to P1 and from P7 to S1.

In their report, the inspectors identified outstanding and sector leading practice in partnership work with parents, the Parent Council and the community. This was evaluated as excellent. Almost all other areas of the work of the school were evaluated as very good or good.

The inspectors encouraged the school to take action to improve aspects of learning and teaching with specific reference to providing pupils with more opportunities to be independent, active learners, to develop systematic procedures for monitoring and evaluating classroom practice and  to develop pupil skills in using information and communications technology.

The Head Teacher,Mr Duncan Mackay, said: “I am delighted that the inspectors felt that the education provided by the staff here at Craighill has many strengths. They also commend our pupils and acknowledge the excellent support we receive from our parents. The report highlights areas which we need to further develop but work on those has been ongoing for some time and should be easily achievable.”

Eddie Quinn, Chairperson of the Parent Council, said:  “I was very pleased to see the abilities and enthusiasm of all the staff being recognised given the conditions of the facilities that they have to work in.”
