The Kirking of the Council

The Kirking of The Council, taking place on the morning of Sunday 13 September 2009 in Inverness, will be marked with colour and pageantry as the combined Pipe Bands of the Royal British Legion and Northern Constabulary will lead uniformed youth groups along High Street and down Church Street to the Old High Kirk – the oldest church in the city.

Pupils and Head Teachers from the city’s secondary schools, together with officials and Councillors in bright red robes, will join the procession from the Town House at 10 am to be greeted at the Old High Kirk by Reverend Peter Nimmo, Minister of the Old High St Stephen’s Church and by Reverend Dr Peter J Howson, Minister of Inverness Methodist Church. The service commences at 10.30 am.

The Reverend Nimmo, who is a key partner in planning this year’s event, said: “I was delighted with the event last year which generated such a sense of occasion. The participation of the uniformed youth groups brought something special to it. Once again this year I look forward to welcoming people of all faiths or none to this historic and important event in the life of our city.”

Provost Jimmy Gray, chairman of The Highland Council’s Inverness City Committee, said: “The Kirking ceremony is an historic yet very meaningful occasion, when councillors and officials annually commit themselves to serving the people of Inverness in a very public way. The revitalised event will help to reinforce the message of commitment while making the ceremony itself a more attractive and enjoyable event for all.”

Last year both High Street and Church Street were lined with onlookers as the 140 strong procession made its way between the Town House and the Old High Kirk. Visitors to the city and locals alike clearly enjoyed the colourful event.
