Skye and Lochalsh Archive Centre - Ionad Tasglainn An Eilein Sgitheanaich agus Loch Aillse

People interested in the local and family history related to Skye and Lochalsh can now find out more at a new facility opened by The Highland Council’s Archive Service.

The Skye and Lochalsh Archive Centre is open on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Fridays from 10am to 1pm and 2pm to 5pm.

Located at Elgin Hostel, Dunvegan Road, Portree the Centre replaces the former Dualchas Heritage Service which used to be based at Tigh na Sgire.

Bill Fernie, Chairman of The Highland Council’s Education, Culture and Sport Committee said: “The opening of the Skye and Lochalsh Archive Centre is a major milestone for the Administration of The Highland Council. This marks completion of the delivery of the Council’s Highland Archive Strategy in providing a state of the art facility at the hub with the Highland Archive and Registration Centre and a network of local archive facilities providing quality access to local information.”

Archive collections held by the Dualchas Heritage Service are now preserved in the archive repository at the new premises, together with archives relating to Skye and Lochalsh which were previously held in Inverness.

The archives which have been repatriated to the area include school records, police archives, and estate papers where they can be made readily accessible to the public in the search room.

Skye and Lochalsh Archive Centre is part of The Highland Council’s hub and spokes strategy for the provision of its Archive Service. The new Highland Archive and Registration Centre at Inverness is the hub at the centre with supporting spokes located in Wick, Fort William and Portree.
