Drivers warned to take extra care on the roads

Northern Constabulary is reminding drivers of the importance of road safety especially over the weekend with a combination of wintry weather, icy conditions, darkness and a higher number of drivers making journeys over the festive period.

Chief Inspector Matthew Reiss, Area Commander for Caithness and Sutherland, said: "Drivers need to be aware of the effect of icy conditions and a number of other factors which can affect their driving ability. We are experiencing typical wintry conditions at the moment and more snowy weather is forecast over the next few days. This is also a time when drivers may be making longer than usual journeys and travelling early in the morning or late at night when tired, after a long day at work, or after parties.

"Before you travel, listen to local news reports and give yourself plenty of time for your journey. Drivers should take lot of extra care, making sure their tyres are legal, that the vehicle is serviced, your lights are clean and working and there is a sufficient level of anti-freeze in the radiator. Allow more time for your journey and drive according to the conditions of the roads. If you are tired, take a break, or consider other methods of getting home.

"Northern Constabulary works closely with Scotland Transerv and the local authorities on road safety matters, but drivers should remember they have a responsibility to drive appropriately for the conditions."

Tyres - legal minimum of 1.6mm, but during winter it is recommended 3mm

Screen wash -  Keep topped up and use proper additive at the right concentration, don't use washing up liquid as this will foam and doesn't have the same low freezing point.

Lights - Check your lights are clean and working

Rescue equipment - In winter you should always be prepared and carry the following: mobile phone, tow rope, shovel, spare wheel, spare bulbs, fuel, hazard warning triangle, de-icing equipment, first aid kit, fire extinguisher, torch and blanket
