Council to review Fort William school provision

Highland Councillors are to review the future needs for pre-school and primary education provision within the Greater Fort William area.

As part of the overall project, some of the options to be examined will be the amalgamation of:

• Fort William Primary and Upper Achintore Primary;

• Caol Primary and Banavie Primary; and

• Fort William RC Primary and Lochyside RC Primary.

The project will also consider how the development of a dedicated Gaelic school for the Greater Fort William area will be achieved.

Members of the Education Culture and Sport Committee approved the need to appoint external consultants to co-ordinate a report to be considered by the Education Culture and Sport Committee on 21 May 2009.

If the project is successful, the Committee believe it could prove a model to be progressed in other communities in the Highlands.

Councillor Michael Foxley, Leader of the Council’s Administration, said: “We want to finally action and develop new primary schools, with full community facilities for our local children.”
