First Phase of Nairn Streetscape Opens

The first phase of the Nairn Streetscape Scheme - at The Brae, Nairn - has opened and The Highland Council is now seeking contractors to carry out the second phase of the project.

The cost of phase one, which links the A 96 with the High Street, was an estimated £170,000. Work was carried out by contractors, Leiths (Scotland) under the supervision of consultants, W A Fairhurst.

Phase two will see the works continue on Gordon Street and the High Street – to the Square.

The Council has made a bid to the Scottish Government’s Town Centre Regeneration Fund for a further £1,327,000 to complete the revamp of the High Street.  The Council should learn by the end of this month if its bid has been successful.

Convener Sandy Park said: “For some time now, environmental improvements to the town centre have been identified as a major priority in helping regenerate Nairn. I am pleased with the progress we are making and would like to thank local businesses for their patience and understanding during the disruption of the construction works.  I hope everyone feels the benefits of the scheme will be worthwhile.

“Phase two will be underway soon and we are keeping our fingers crossed that our bid for major Government funding comes through to ensure the High Street is completed.”
