Highland Pupils Brassed Off!

This week hundreds of pupils across the Highlands will be enjoying musical workshops led by Pure Brass, a quintet of talented students from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Dance.

Music from Star Wars and The Incredibles, as well as the rousing Olympic fanfare are just some of the pieces pupils will be listening to in the workshops which also include a talk and individual demonstrations on the trumpet, tuba, trombone and horn.

Pure Brass, a vibrant, young and well established brass quintet, look to bring top class music making to people of all ages throughout Scotland.  In a relatively short period of time, the group has built up widespread experience, working extensively in recital, giving numerous educational concerts and performing at many prestigious events. Education is central to their work and the Highland schools tour is part of the Live Music Now scheme which brings live music to young people across the whole of Scotland.

The Pure Brass Highland schools tour starts on Tuesday in Ross-shire with visits to Dingwall Primary and Craighill Primary in Tain.  The following day it is the turn of primary 6 and 7 pupils from Rosebank and Millbank schools in Nairn before the whole of Smithton Primary in Inverness gathered together in the afternoon for the workshop and performance.

On Thursday the quintet visit will visit Lochaber High School where the Council’s brass instructor Mark Reynolds, an acquaintance of the young musicians, will take over the role of tuba player during the quintet’s performances to 2nd year pupils.

Norman Bolton, The Highland Council’s Music Development Officer said:  “We are delighted that Pure Brass were able to visit our schools.  Their talent and infectious enthusiasm has given a fun learning experience for pupils and it has been a great opportunity for young people to hear quality live music.”
